How this scam works
- 1
Step 1: You open a link or page that uses a familiar company's name and logo and says you have reward points waiting.
- 2
Step 2: The page says the points will expire soon and offers gifts or special offers if you redeem them now.
- 3
Step 3: To see your points balance, the page asks you to type in your mobile number and press Continue.
- 4
Step 4: The page is on a new web address that does not belong to the company, so the number and anything else you enter go to the people running the page.
✓ Do this
- Check any points or rewards in the company's official app, or on its website typed in yourself.
- Contact the company through the customer service number on its official website or your bill if you are unsure.
- Report the link on the platform or app where you received it, then delete it.
- If you entered your number and then get a code by text, do not share the code with anyone.
✗ Avoid this
- Do not enter your phone number, codes or card details on a reward page you reached from a link.
- Do not trust a page because it shows the company's logo, adverts or menus.
- Do not rush because the page says your points are about to expire.
