This is a version of Fake Game Download Malware Scam.

SteamUnlocked game-download site offers pre-installed games and a launcher

A website branded SteamUnlocked advertises free, pre-installed PC games and a separate launcher. The page looks like a polished game catalogue and says it contains more than 24,000 games, which can make the download seem trustworthy. It offers direct game downloads and a launcher outside Steam's official distribution system. A downloaded file was approximately 5.5 MB, but no file hash or safe static analysis was available for this review, so the file's contents were not confirmed. Untrusted game executables and launchers can expose children and other users to malware, unwanted software, account theft, or unsafe advertising.

What’s different in this version

These traits set this message apart from the usual pattern.

  1. Uses SteamUnlocked branding and the promise of free pre-installed PC games.

  2. Promotes a separate 'Get the Launcher' button and a large catalogue of games outside the official Steam client.

  3. The site presents game categories, popular titles, FAQs, and an 'official' claim to make the service feel legitimate.

  4. A downloaded file was reported to be about 5.5 MB, but its contents were not analyzed and it should not be opened.

  5. The site does not provide the protections, publisher verification, or update path of an official game store.

How this scam works

  1. 1

A page copies a familiar game platform or studio and advertises a new game, update, or playtest.

  2. 2

The page offers a password-protected ZIP and displays the password so the download can avoid some automated scanning.

  3. 3

The extracted files are presented as a Windows or macOS game, but may contain malware instead of a game.

  4. 4

Instructions may tell the victim to run an unknown program, paste a command into Terminal, or enter a computer password.

✓ Do this

  • Close the page and report the account or message that shared it through the platform where you received it.
  • If you downloaded the archive but did not open it, delete it and empty the Trash or Recycle Bin.
  • If you ran it or entered a computer password, disconnect the device and ask a parent, teacher, trusted adult, or qualified technician for help.
  • Change important passwords from a different clean device and revoke active sessions if the file was opened.

✗ Avoid this

  • Do not download, extract, or run a game file from an unexpected link.
  • Do not paste installation commands from a download page into Terminal or Command Prompt.
  • Do not enter your computer password because a game installer or webpage asks for it.
  • Do not assume a password-protected ZIP is safe or that a familiar gaming logo proves the download is real.
